Michael is an embedded writing coach at West Shore Community College, where he works with Composition 1 and 2 students while also serving in other academic support capacities.
Paula Rolim, the professor of the composition classes, nominated Michael for the honor.
Paula said students have come to value and appreciate feedback on their writing due to the way that Michael builds trusted relationships with them, creating a space where they feel safe and respected.
“That kind of relationship is foundational for learning,” she said.
He also finds many other ways to be caring and helpful – from creating spreadsheets that organize student data to donating one of his own laptop computers to a student in need.
Michael is a former high school theater teacher. He has a master’s degree from New York University and is currently pursuing his Ph.D. at Aberdeen University in Scotland, where he studies education with a focus on applied theater and academic and artistic equity.
“I have spent my entire adult life working with students in all different capacities, and I love watching someone realize they are far more capable than they thought they were, and that they don’t have to make excuses because the things they’re doing are great,” he said.
He also loves the environment at West Shore Community College and the people he works with.
When he isn’t assisting students at the college, he is busy writing his dissertation or working on the Downtown Development Authority for Filer Township. He’s also an avid rock climber, and likes to play pickleball with his dad.
Congratulations, Michael, and thank you for all of your contributions to West Shore Community College!
