Edustaff congratulates Dr. Jennifer L. R. Mick on being named Higher Education Employee of the Month for February.

Dr. Mick has taught history and Spanish at Glen Oaks Community College since 2012. She lived in Madrid, Spain to learn her Spanish.

She has a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s degree in Spanish, a master’s degree in history, and a doctorate in higher education leadership.

Adam Cloutier, vice president of academics at Glen Oaks, said Dr. Mick volunteers her time to serve on college councils and committees, and recently volunteered to lead a faculty professional development session on resilience.

“Attended by full- and part-time faculty, Dr. Mick facilitated an interactive session that received praise from faculty and administrators,” he said. “She does not get paid extra for this but sincerely wants to improve her teaching and learning, and teaching and learning at the college.”

Dr. Mick said she likes to help wherever she can, and she always approaches her part-time positions with the same dedication she would give to a full-time job.

She says one of the reasons she loves teaching is that the students help keep her feeling young.

“They keep me thinking and wanting to research,” she says. “I still like being a student. If I could go for another degree, I probably would.”

But also, she genuinely loves teaching.

“It’s a tough job, mentally and physically,” she says. “If you are a teacher who stays in it, it’s because you really love it, and you love helping people.”

In her spare time, she enjoys watching tennis, golf, and football, spending time with family, and “learning all the languages if I could,” she says. Right now, she is interested in Chinese and Korean.

Thank you, Dr. Mick, for your dedication to your students and to Glen Oaks Community College!
