Edustaff would like to congratulate John O’Hagan on being named Edustaff’s Higher Education Employee of the Month for January!

John is an adjunct professor at West Shore Community College, where he has taught Introduction to Criminal Justice, Police Procedures and Special Operations since 2020.

Lisa O’Connor, Workforce Support Specialist at the college, nominated John for the honor. She said that without a doubt, he is meant to teach.

“You can see when he walks in the building that he is not only prepared but visibly excited to teach for the day. He takes class seriously and is always willing to go beyond what is expected to help students achieve success in his class,” she said. “He puts in extra effort to make each class something new and keep them engaged. Students leave wanting more all the time. He is always willing to put in extra time to help if anyone is struggling.”

John was formerly the Manistee County Sheriff, and retired in 2019 to take the teaching position at WSCC. He said he loves engaging and motivating the students, helping them understand the complexities of law enforcement.

“I get to help shape our future professionals and inspire our next generation of law enforcement,” he said. “I love watching the students grow and overcome their own challenges. It is so rewarding watching them grow from the start of class to the end.”

He also loves building connections with the students that continue long after graduation.

“I build these healthy relationships, and they go well beyond the classroom,” he said. “They reach out to me, and that is priceless.”

When he is not teaching, John enjoys spending time with his wife of nearly 30 years, Lindsay, and their kids, Dakotah and Jayden. He is also a longtime sports official for the Michigan High School Athletic Association, and enjoys volunteering at the local senior center.

Thanks, John, for everything you do for West Shore Community College and your community!
